Flag of the Taino People

I was born and raised on Borikén Island, the Taino name for Puerto Rico.  The Tainos are the indigenous peoples of Puerto Rico prior to the colonization by Spain. It was estimated that up to 50,000 Tainos lived in Puerto Rico when Christopher Columbus arrived - they are now nearly extinct.  English words with Taino roots include Canoe (canoa), Barbecue (barbacoa), Hammock (hamaca), Hurricane (huracan), and Tobacco (tabaco).
